Reigning Miss Teen Plus America
Dorothy Gray
Dorothy Gray is a 17-year-old who is making her mark in the world. She is from Mound Bayou, Mississippi, known as the “Jewel of the Delta”. She attends Northside High School in Shelby, MS as a senior. She is a well-known scholar student and ranks high in her class. Dorothy’s academics are very important to her. She has held various leadership positions at Northside, including Class President, Class Vice President, SGA Secretary, Section Leader, and FCCLA Secretary. And she is a very artistic person. That is why she’s participated in Drama Club, Art Editor in the Yearbook Club, Blu Diamondz Step Team, and Choir. When she’s not doing that she hangs out with her friends, doing her makeup and hair, or making some TikToks. She is hoping to make her senior year, her best year.
With her platform “You Can”, she focuses on mental health awareness with children, teens, and adults. Dorothy chose this platform because it sits close to her heart. She has suffered from depression and also has anxiety. She once felt she had to keep everything inside and smile away the pain. And she has grown up with a couple of family members that suffer from mental illness. She knows firsthand what it looks and feels like. She has now spoken her truth and is working on her mental health. She believes you are never too young to be depressed. Dorothy stated, “I used to feel that way about myself. Some of the things that caused me to feel like that were being bullied in school because I was bigger than everyone else, having low self-esteem, and not loving myself for who I am. I don’t know how I handled it over so many years. I think how I coped was music. Now, no matter how I was
feeling in the moment it would calm me and erase everything I was thinking. But that’s not a solution; you have to open up and let someone in to help. That’s what I did. I finally told my mom about everything one day, got some help, and went to therapy. I still have anxiety today, but I’m getting help and trying to start therapy again.”
She doesn't want teens, kids, or any adult for that matter to go through what she went through. She wants people to know that it’s okay to feel that way, but it is not okay to stay that way. She believes you can’t just sit there and let your life go by and miss all the exciting moments. Getting help and healing your trauma are some of the main things that help. The United States has one of the highest rates of mental health disorders. She wants to start a program built around her platform “You Can”. She wants it to be a safe space for people to come and talk. Letting them know that they have someone in their corner for them. That’s why she wants to spread the message that mental health is important regardless of age and that it's okay to get help. I want us together to get the help that we need!
