MPA What made you enter MPA?
Latasha In the Fall of 2007 I was asked to judge the Washington State National American Miss Pageant. These young ladies were poised on stage and passionate about their platforms. I loved the public speaking and fashion side too! I decided to Google and see if there was a pageant for me. That’s when I found MPA and I immediately signed up and became visible within my state! Doors were opened for me that would not have been if I was just Latasha-walking-down-the-street!
MPA How did you feel as you were traveling to the pageant?
Latasha This being my third attempt at the national crown, surprisingly I was at peace, but anxious to reunite with old friends and meet new ones. I knew I had done all I could do to prepare and I was ready for the responsibility that a national title would bring me. Bottom line, I was ready and I made up my mind that this year either way I would walk away content because I knew I did my part!
MPA What was your favorite part of the pageant?
Latasha I love the parties!! The PJ party was fun because although I am not a skilled dancer, I love to dance!!! And the Diva Party, we all got to get it in!  That was great! I even taught the Texas Director how to do the Love Slide!
MPA Tell us about the new friends you made.
Latasha Ironically, Esther, Evelyn and I clicked right away! The day before registration we spent hours talking and sharing our passions and tips for success! Also, Ms Indiana, Emily Blue was amazing. She prayed for me and encouraged me the moment we met! Both Ashley Focer and Myisha Hill listened to me and encouraged me! Last but not least, my amazing state sister queen Deontrae kept me in line and thinking positive! Oh and a shout out to my adopted sister queen Mrs. CA “Are you new?"
MPA What was the toughest part of the competition?
Latasha In 2008 I would have said interview, and 2009, stage, but this year I prepared and had a team of prayer warriors behind me back home, so it was not easy per say, but it was like taking a test I knew I studied thoroughly for. I knew I did my best.
MPA What was the most difficult question to answer in interview?
Latasha “A few years ago a man was pardoned by Arkansas authorities and fled to Seattle and killed four police officers in a coffee shop, should Arkansas be held accountable?” This was bad because I did not remember this! I remembered the four police officers getting shot, but I had no idea the killer fled from Arkansas after being pardoned! I graciously told the judge “I apologize sir, but I do not remember that incident, but based on the information you just gave me….” (Can’t remember all I said) then I finished by saying, “again, my apologies.” He said “no need to apologize that was a great answer!"
MPA How did you feel during the opening number?
Latasha I felt sexy, beautiful and ready to hear the results!! I had so much fun! Thank goodness our choreographer was pregnant because the routine was WAY easier than the previous two years! LOL!
MPA What was the mood back-stage?
Latasha Everyone was so supportive an encouraging! No tension at all actually! Even those who did not make top five where positive…at least towards me! Most of us were just tired and anxious for the results!
MPA

What was the first thing that went through your mind when you heard your name called?

Latasha

Well first, I heard Allison Kopach…so I was thinking man…at least I am first runner-up (that was for about 2 seconds). Then I realized that meant I was Miss Plus America!!!! Immediately my hands shot in the air and I said “Daddy I did it!” Then kept thanking Jesus and saying hi to my dad who is in heaven! (He passed suddenly in October 2009.) Poor Shavon, she could not get me still to put the crown on my head! LOL!
MPA Describe your crowning moment.
Latasha UN-BELIEVE-ABLE!! Like a dream! After THREE tries it was my turn to shine! And its not like I was a 1st runner-up or 2nd runner-up, I never even placed my previous two years. So I was humbled that these judges felt I was the right fit for the job of Miss Plus America 2010!
MPA What plans do you have for your year's reign?
Latasha OMG! A LOT! I have had a plan of attack for a national title for two years! My job as Miss Plus America is three-fold: (1) Advocate for 60% of the American female population which happens to be a size 14+ (2) Promote the MPA program by bringing exposure to this system and recruiting directors and delegates (3)Promote my personal platform - *Keeping in mind that I have two sons who come first in my life and everything I do as it pertains to this title will come after them.*
MPA How do you plan to promote your platform?
Latasha I will seek out Nationally recognized non-profits specifically geared towards the edification of single parents. And collaborate with these like-minded organizations to give hope to single parents who feel they can not be productive members of society and to do whatever I can within my 12 months of service to change the image of the single parent in America.
MPA What advice would you give to anyone looking to enter the Miss Plus America pageant?
Latasha NIKE! Just do it! It will change your life! You will grow as a person and your dreams can be realized through this experience! Outside of my regular responsibilities I have three loves: People, Modeling and Public Speaking. Pageantry has allowed me to combine all three of those in one! It might seem scary, but remember its okay if you are different, that’s your competitive edge!

July Diary Entry

I was still on 'Cloud 9' as I traveled back to Seattle after being crowned the night before! During my two hour lay over at the Houston Airport my banner drew much attention. The gentleman below wearing the orange thought my banner said "Miss Public Relations!" So he was asking me all these marketing questions (lol). This was a great opportunity for me to talk about Miss Plus America and how it has changed my life. I also was able to educate those who questioned the purpose of a plus-exclusive pageant. I met a national girls chess team and a little girl on her way to Guatemala who has never met a beauty queen before. I witnessed the power of the banner and title. Stay tuned, I have many plans for the next 359 days of my reign!

July - 2nd Appearance

I expect this year to bring me many opportunities an appearances, but I have to make sure I look good and represent us well right? So I took a trip to my local Catherine's and used my gift card which was one of the major prizes I was awarded after being crowned Miss Plus America! Catherine's is a plus-exclusive division of Charming Shoppes Inc and they have great fashions which will definitely keep me looking hot on my appearances!

THANK YOU CATHERINE'S for sponsoring Miss Plus America!  Check out Catherines by visiting their website:  Click Here!

July 22, 2010 I was asked to be on the Advisory Board for the National Single Parent Resource Center (NSPRC)! This is truly significant to me because it is going to allow me to work on behalf of my personal platform, S.P.A.C.E - Single Parents Achieving Confidence & Excellence. This organization was established in 1994 by Coach Judy Romanoff. She has received many awards from esteemed organizations such as Parenting Coalition International and the National Press Club in Washington D.C.

The mission statement of NSPRC is to provide Empowering, Educational, Supportive, Programs that, "enhance lives of single families." As and Advisory Board Member I will play a role in the facilitation and implementation of fundraisers, travel with Coach Judy doing seminars and featured as a special guest on her radio show! I am so excited to be apart of such an amazing organization. I believe my commitment will lead me beyond my reign as Miss Plus America because the edification of single parents is my passion, my life mission.

August Diary Entry

All I can say is WHAT A MONTH!  August was AWESOME!

It was exciting to start August off with a live TV interview on the New Day Northwest talk show! I was able to share a little of my story, about my platform and the relevance of plus women and single parents in America. The best part was seeing my sons go mute when it was their turn to speak...that NEVER happens! I guess if I want them to be quiet at home I just need to install a TV camera! LOL It was an excellent networking opportunity and an overall positive experience!

I also had the privilege to be the official MC of the National All American Girl Pageant (AAG) in Portland, OR! OMG, these girls and young women were amazing! This is a natural pageant that promotes youth development. I was amazed at how polished they were and how serious they were about winning that title! Below you will see photos from the Preliminaries which were the second two days of the four-day competition. Day one: Interview, day two: Casual Wear and onstage Introduction, and day three: party wear and evening gown for the older divisions.

While in Portland I also was a celebrity guest at Semper Fashion's Rock the Runway V5 event! I had a blast! I walked into this venue that was monopolized by society's definition of beauty; rail thin, and totally drew attention! A lot of people had no idea there was a Miss Plus America and thought it was awesome! I was able to network with designers who aspired to incorporate a plus line in their clothing label as well as educate the critics on what the purpose and mission statement of MPA is! I was pleasantly surprised by Ms Oregon Plus America 2008, Merilee Kautz and enjoyed fellowship with the CEO/ Founder of Kane Creations and SKORCH Magazine, Jessica Kane! What a fabulous night, I truly felt like a star!

August - 4th Appearance

My last day in Oregon ended with the AAG final competition. This was SIX hours of MC time for me! Each contestant was able to re-compete for the judges, family and friends. It included the announcement of Top Five in all seven divisions, announcement of overall national division winners and many other national optional titles. Every time a contestant was crowned was literally déjà vu for me because it has only been one month since my magical moment! Ever contestant left with something, oh and the Overall trophies were 7ft. tall!!! WOW!

August - 5th Appearance

The following weekend after I returned from Oregon I was the emcee for the 9th Annual SummerFest Community Arts Festival opening ceremony at St. John Church, which was a community event celebrating Service! The theme was: Serving Our Transforming Community. The ceremony included presentation of the colors by Boy Scouts #4802 and inspirational words from several service leaders from the Police Department, Fire Department, Lewis Mcchord Base and the City. I also had the privilege of meeting with local Radio Talk Show Host, Minister Ivan Johnson which you will see below!

August - 6th Appearance

Last but not least I was privileged to be the MC for the Seafair sanctioned, 14th Annual Central Area Community Festival(CACF)! This event included live music of diverse genres, bingo, back-to-school giveaways and many amazing vendor booths such as John Robert Powers Talent, Spinal Research Exams and political candidate representatives. It was especially neat for me because my sons were able to come with me and they had a blast too! Thank you so much for reading. You think August was full...stay tuned for September!
