2008 Miss Plus
America Elite

Calandra Griffin
Q&A With The New
Miss Plus America Elite!
| MPA |
What made
you enter MPA? |
| Calandra |
It
was suggested that I enter a few years ago. I had always turned
down the idea because I had the notion that I was “just regular”
but the thought never left. Last year I had made up my mind to
enter. Again I turned down the opportunity because my father
died and was not emotionally capable. This year I decided the
time was now! I had never been in a pageant. The first was the
Texas Plus America Pageant and the second was MPA. |
| MPA |
How did
you feel as you were traveling to the pageant? |
| Calandra |
Anxious and
ready! I know God was protecting my steps because I can’t
remember the time from my house to Ervay St. |
| MPA |
What was
your favorite part of the orientation? |
| Calandra |
The parties! The
Slumber Party and the Viva La Diva Party was an opportunity for
everyone to relax, let their hair down, dance and really get to
know one another. I especially loved the Diva Party. Our
family and friends could join us and meet the other delegates.
All of the delegates and guests looked FANTABULOUS! |
| MPA |
Tell us
about the new friends you made. |
|
Calandra |
The best way to
describe it is like a sorority but better. Everyone has the
others back. No matter where you are from, what you have or
don’t have. There is a level of diversity that supersedes so
many other organizations. That diversity brings so many types
of consciousness that so many facets of our society are
represented. I am proud to be a part of this. This is what
America is. |
| MPA |
What was
the toughest part of the competition? |
| Calandra |
Group B
Preliminaries. Although the schedule was written and followed,
I never felt ready during this time period. I think my fear
took over and made me skeptical about me being there. I’m not a
quitter. I had to do it, there was no going home. |
| MPA |
What was
the most difficult question to answer in interview? |
| Calandra |
All of the
questions were equally challenging. I wanted to make sure that
I thought carefully about all of the questions and answers.
|
| MPA |
How did
you feel during the opening number? |
| Calandra |
Sexy and silly! I
felt I didn’t get all the steps and was messing up! (I’m
laughing so hard right now!) But looking at all of the ladies
and the feedback from some of the audience members I think we
gave ‘em the WOW! I can’t wait to see the DVD! |
| MPA |
What was
the mood back-stage? |
| Calandra |
Ready and
excited!!!! Everyone was helping everyone and making sure we as
a whole were one. That was great! |
| MPA |
What was it like knowing that
Zoo Productions was filming you? |
| Calandra |
It was a little weird at first but by the end of the week it
became a norm. I didn’t even notice until they were asking me
specific questions |
| MPA |
What was the first thing that went through
your mind when you heard your name called? |
| Calandra |
When my name was
called for the top 15, I was thrilled! Yes! It’s on now! |
| MPA |
Describe
your crowning moment. |
|
Calandra |
When Debbie called
my name for Miss Plus America Elite I was truly stunned and
paralyzed. I was listening for a moment after she called my
name because maybe there was a mistake. I finally got movement
in my legs and made my way to the front so Jenna could crown
me. Backstage she gave me the biggest hug and congratulations
and told me “Girl, do you know you’ve made history! I’m so
proud of you!” I have to say this has truly been the proudest
achievement I have ever conquered. |
| MPA |
What went through
your mind when you heard that you may have a chance to play for
$ ONE MILLION on “Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader”? |
|
Calandra |
WOOOOO HOOOOO!!!!!! |
| MPA |
What
plans do you have for your year's reign? |
|
Calandra |
I want to have
fun! I want to meet lots of people! I want to go everywhere!
I want everyone to know about MPA and what it does for women who
get involved in it. I want women to feel the way that I feel
and show it. You have to love your self so that others can love
you too. |
| MPA |
How do
you plan to promote your platform? |
|
Calandra |
Student Leadership
Through Law and Government Programs
This will give me
the opportunity to meet local, state and national politicians.
This is a monumental year for voting and getting involved in
politics. I pray I can shed light on students and adults and
make them aware of the need for us to make necessary decisions
about our government and who is working for us in those
realms. |
| MPA |
What
advice would you give to anyone looking to enter the Miss Plus
America pageant? |
|
Calandra |
Go for it!!! Be
prepared because this is a life changing experience! Do not go
in thinking you will win the contest. Do it for the sake of
just doing it with you best in mind. You will be among the most
beautiful women in the world, inside and out. This will also
give you the opportunity to focus on and bring a particular
issue or charitable organization to the light of others who
could possibly be of help. It’s fun! MPA also sharpens who
you are physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

July Diary Entry
Well, this whole thing is
still unbelievable and overwhelming. I'm still trying to adjust
to my life with this incredible title! I want to do the best that
I can do and represent MPA to the fullest. I want to show the
world that MPA is about heart, soul, brains and beauty. All of
these things encompass what a wonderful woman is.
"As for the Future, your
task is not to foresee but to enable it."-Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Well, the first thing I
would like to discuss is my platform-Student Leadership Through
Law and Government Programs. Many may not know this but I'm a
high school history teacher. I sponsor the following
organizations: Mock Trial, Student Council and the Youth and
Government Program. I do my platform everyday. That is one
reason why I chose it. Many Americans find very little interest
in politics, law or our government but complain about our leaders
and how they run the show. I feel that it is my duty to teach
young people to not become complacent with what is going on in our
society but to take a part in it and change what they do not like
about it. One of the best ways to do this is through law and
government programs. When I expose students to these realms, most
become excited and want to go further with their learning and
continue expanding the process of the matter.

Torrid Model Search
My first
appearance was the Torrid Model Search at the Parks Mall in
Arlington , Texas . I was a little nervous yet excited about
showing up. I expected there to be a line wrapped around the mall
twice with hundreds of beautiful women waiting their turn for their
opportunity for fame and exposure. When I got there and parked I
noticed that there was no line wrapped around the mall. As I walked
through the mall I noticed no line stretching to the outer door.
When I approached the Torrid store there was no line there either.
Maybe I had the wrong day. I went inside the manager looked at me
the automatically assumed what I was there for and escorted me to
the area where the other ladies were. She was correct of course.
There were about 8 ladies vying for their chance while I was there.
They all were very sweet and nice. I even saw a couple of people
who I had known already (ASHLEY)! When I put my crown on and
explained to everyone who I was they were really excited and proud.
We were approached by two ladies who were shopping in the store from
Tyler , TX . They were talking about how difficult it was to shop
for clothes in a small town as a larger woman and people react to
them. They loved the fact that I was Miss Plus America Elite 2008.
Ashley gave them information to website and for the Texas pageants
if they or anyone were interested. You should see their pics
below. I questioned why were there not as many females there as I
think should have. The manager said that it was a 3 day event and
you could drop the application and photo off from Friday through
Sunday. I was happy with that information but why was there not
more!!!
With
this experience, I realized that plus sized lady information is for
the most part word of mouth (That's how I got the info). This has
got to change. That should have been on the radio, television and
newspaper. Every where!!!!

A Red
Carpet Affair
This event was
a political gala and fundraiser for local Dallas delegates that were
nominated during the Texas Caucus. This was really fun!!! I met a
lot of people. Celebrities, local and state representatives,
performers, vendors etc all met for the common interest of sending
these delegates to Austin to perform their stately duties. A part
of the money was given to benefit the Maxey House and the Dallas
International Street Church . Both organizations goals were to
assist youths, women and the homeless. They had representatives
there from each of the beneficiaries and they all fit right into the
rest of the crowd. It really was just a huge party! There was
music, food, casino games and a style show! Everyone had a great
time! I am a somewhat shy person. I was a little nervous about
going. I served as a hostess and greeted patrons attending. Boy I
tell you, if you want any attention wear red and a beautiful huge
crown! LOL!! EVERYONE asked who I was. I talked to a lot of
people and explained MPA. I wish my business cards were in then.
OH! I met Irma P. Hall!! She is the sweet cute older lady that
played the grandmother in the movie Soul Food. She was soooo sweet
and nice! She seemed just excited to see me as I was to see her!
It was so funny! There is a picture of me with her. Dallas is full
of talented and passionate people. I was glad to be a part of
this. I am thankful for my title and crown. How could I ever have
the gumption to do and be a part of any of this?

Coronation Ceremony
The Texas Plus
America team put together a Coronation Ceremony for me and Regina
Linwood the NEW Ms. Texas Plus America. It was the nicest and
sweetest thing anyone other than a family member has done for me.
The food was great, lots of people came in support of the both of us
and there was a plethora of kind words said. Shoots! It was almost
better than my birthday! I tip my hat of thanks and gratitude to
Mrs. Nanette Watts, Mrs. Anne Rodgers, Miss Ensie Jones, my sisters
Shea and LeShanon, my mother Vivian. You have been a continual
support system since I’ve decided to be involved with Plus America.
I love you all dearly!!! It warms me so much that God graced me
with people who truly care about me. All of the Texas queens:
Miesha Medford, Lauren Stewart, Mrs. BJ Johnson (my cousin LOL!),
thank you for all of you support and love. Every little and big
thing that you do is wonderful. All of the county directors thank
you for your support! I know this is an event that you will look
forward to celebrating in the future with your winners. I thank Mr.
Jones, my principal for all that he does in support of everything I
get myself into. (Smile)
Oklahoma! You are some fantastic ladies! Thank you for driving
around for almost two hours to come see me and celebrate. LOL! It
was a pure pleasure having you there.
I was very surprised and excited because Melissa came to the
celebration! She played a trick on me. She said that she was not
coming because it was out of town and her husband was not feeling
well. I understood that, especially since we just finished the
pageant last month. It made me truly happy that she came despite
everything else.
I would like to tell Regina, Ms. Texas Plus America 2008: Have a
great reign. This is one of the best experiences you could have in
life. I could not have asked for a better person to carry on the
title. You are beautiful inside and out. Being queen is work, fun
and rewarding. Get as much out of this as you can.
I know and feel that Plus America is BIG. After the celebration, I
feel ready to do what I need to do for my title as Miss Plus America
Elite 2008. I have a ton of people who are willing and have my back
beyond all circumstances. That’s the best part of this.

Welcome Back To School Reading
Day
I am always ready to get back to work after a long summer. I miss
the kids so much! It was a wonderful pleasure to go see Mrs. Texas
Plus America-Miesha Medford at her place of work as a kindergarten
teacher. She had been looking forward to it for a long time. It is
also sweet to see the little babies that are so pure and innocent.
I enjoy my high school students also, but you don’t always see the
light in their eyes as you do in the younger children. The book I
chose to read was Incredible You by Dr. Wayne Dyer. It is
about making the right decisions and liking yourself just for being
you. The kids really liked the end because we had a discussion
about the book and what would you do scenarios. They were really
into it and came up with really interesting answers. In the end,
the student who remembered my name received the book as a gift.
That was fun!
It is so wonderful to be given to and to be able to give. This
month is about paying it forward. Try it and see how you can make
someone’s day, week or month. It is a blessing to be a blessing to
others.
See ya’ll next month! Smooches!

“You can’t stay in your
corner of the forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to
go to them sometimes.
–Winnie the Pooh
I would like to thank Mrs. BJ Johnson for helping me and giving me
advice by showing me how a Queen should be, what she should expect
and know that I can still keep my humility with this role. “Ask and
ye shall receive.” I love you and those who continually help me,
check on me, push me and show me that I mean something to them and
others. This position is so much fun and meaningful but it is a
challenge for me to get out there because of my slightly
introversive personality.
Friday, September 26, 2008 - Texas State Fair Opening Day Parade
I have participated in parades before in high school with the
marching band and flag corp. This parade was so much different. My
body wasn’t aching and sore. Nor was I sweating profusely and
stinky. I had a great time! Don Herring Mitsubishi of Dallas
sponsored a black convertible Eclipse for us to drive. Boy did we
think we were hot! (Well, we were already the bomb. The car just
took us to another level that was somewhere near atomic!-That’s how
fabulous we were!). My friend from work and sister escorted me and
drove the car. The weather was beautiful-not too hot and not too
cool. There could not have been a more perfect day. As we drew
nearer towards the crowds, we waved and smiled. There were two other
“regular” beauty queens riding directly in front of me. They were
stunning. When the crowd saw me and read my sign they started
clapping and cheering! “Woo hoo! Yeah Miss Plus America! You go
girl! You are beautiful!” Construction workers were cheering and
whistling. Many men on the streets were making curvy signs with both
hands and giving the thumbs up. I was so moved that I got teary
eyed! The people were so proud! Most of the plus sized ladies and
even small women were beaming. I see that I represent a lot of
people. That is important. We all need someone to relate to in some
fashion form or another. I pray many of them took down the
information and can be a part or participate in MPA. It will change
their lives. I am living proof!
Saturday, September 27,
2008 - Friendship Baptist Church-Health Fair
“Family First”
I attend a fairly large church in The Colony, TX that I have been a
member of since I was a teenager. Many of the members have seen me
and my sisters grow up to be ladies. I did not tell hardly anyone
that I was involved in MPA so when I won Miss Plus America Elite my
sister told tons of people at the church but they didn’t know what
it meant. I arrived in crown and sash and boy were there questions!
The kids are so cute! They were all shocked and surprised that a
Queen showed up at church. We went through the booths getting
information and getting tested for osteoporosis, checking
cholesterol and glucose levels and getting our blood pressure
checked. There were other booths such as health and life insurance,
personal trainers, spiritual guidance and a booth for all types of
organic products. Sister Hernandez sells those from a company called
Shaklee. It ranges from vitamins, food and household products. It
felt good being there knowing that I have the support of my church
members. I also want to encourage a few of the ladies to be a part
of MPA. They have asked me about the information and want to attend
future pageants. I have said nothing but a word! I’m on it!!!
Until next time, may God
keep you and may peace be your blanket.

Tarrant County Plus America Interest Meeting
There are going to be
some beautiful ladies in the pageant this year! (I bet this is said
every year!) Constance Pullam and Ashley Henderson, the directors
of the Tarrant County Plus America Pageant, invited me to join them
for the interest meeting. They gave very helpful information and
are so prepared for the upcoming event on February 28, 2009. I love
the fact that we are all working together to make MPA the biggest
and best it should be. Excellent job ladies!

Wiley College Chapter-Omega Psi Phi Scholarship Ball
My family, friends and I attend this Ball in Marshall, TX each
year. It was a pleasure to be presented as Miss Plus America
Elite! It was so fun taking pictures and speaking about MPA. I was
asked numerous questions about who I was, when and where was the
pageant. I even pulled a few interested ladies to become a part of
the MPA system. The graduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity
hosts the dance as a way to fund a scholarship program that they
offer to eligible African-American young men who attend Wiley
College. What a beautiful event for a wonderful cause! Yes, this
is the college that is premiered in the movie The Great Debaters
starring heart throb Denzel Washington.

America Boot Camp
There I
was in the opposite position I was in last year. The ladies looked
on in awe as the Texas queens, Loren and Myiesha, and I introduced
ourselves and informed them of MPA. I remembered last year when I
saw Sabrina and Sarah at the Boot Camp. They were like dreams! I
thought, what beautiful ladies! It was fun! TPA Pageant is going
to be great with meeting all of the ladies that attended the camp.
I feel we made a definite impression on them and they look forward
to all of the upcoming events. I am so proud of the Texas county
directors and Nanette Watts. They are really doing the “dog on
thang!” LOL!!!!
Tuesday,
November 18, 2008 & Wednesday, November 19, 2008 -
University of North Texas Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant
For the
past four years, the fraternity of Alpha Phi Alpha has put on this
scholarship pageant (out of numerous other scholarships) for young
ladies to represent their chapter. It was a two day event. The
interviews were held on Tuesday and the pageant itself was held on
Wednesday. What a sight to see so many beautiful ladies try out for
a scholarship by participating in a pageant. They were all so
different and interesting it was hard scoring. I’m glad I didn’t
have the sole responsibility of choosing. I had the company of four
other judges who were extremely cordial. The winner was Darynelle
Brown. She did a spectacular performance in the talent portion of
the pageant. She was also very well spoken and carried herself like
the lady she is. I am extremely proud of all of those that
participated. This event would not have been carried out with the
help of two young ladies from the sorority of Alpha Kappa Alpha.
Excellent job! This is my alma mater. I was touched that my friend
Benjamin Jackson, who is an alumni also and a member of A Phi A,
asked me to be a part of the affair. He is a very active and devout
Alpha member who tries to make sure that they receive and produce
the best possible. I’m so proud of my friend. I love you Ben!!!!!

- Miss Merry
Christmas Pageant
I was asked to judge another pageant at the end of this week. The
Miss Merry Christmas Pageant. It was for kids ages 1-20. It was
the cutest thing! These little ladies came out in all of their
Christmas attire looking adorable!!! Oh my God! I thought about
getting a baby for myself after seeing these cuties! They were
talented too! One of the teens got up there and played the drums.
She was really jamming! This was fun. I am seeing pageantry from
an entirely different perspective. The other two judges were
Constance Pullam, Tarrant County Plus America Director, and Tracie
Morgan. It was such a pleasure judging with these ladies. We had a
spectacular day. The director of show was Mary Hanna. She did a
great job for her first time ever directing a pageant! Mary will
also be participating in the Texas Plus America Pageant. She looks
forward to the event. Good luck Mary!

Lyles Middle School Career Day
This was an
interesting day! My friend Donna Mitchell, who helps me out in
more ways than one asked me to come and be a part of career day at
the school she in which she is a counselor. The kids asked very
in depth questions and were so in tuned with what goes on in the
world. They were also very accepting. I gave away more business
cards and pictures than any other place that Iʼve been. Many of
the students said they wanted their mothers or other ladies they
knew to become a part of MPA. They loved the idea of it! Times
are surely changing. Young people are becoming more accepting to
differences in people. They gave me my own personal assistant for
the day! Danzel was such a sweet, helpful and well mannered young
man. I was so moved by this function. It shows that children are
seeing and experiencing more than what they see on T.V.
This was a very busy month for me! Whew!!! I would like to say very
special congratulations to the new president elect, Barack Obama.
His nomination has turned a new stone within this country. I pray
he is honored because of his professionalism and integrity so that
he leads this country the best way he can with the support of the
citizens of this country. I know it is a little hard being a
first. You have to set trends and be the best that you can be.
Everyone is looking and watching. Everyone is waiting to see what
you will bring to the table. Please be open and remember we are all
Americans.
See ya’
next month!

“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but
that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our
sins.”-II John 4:10
This is the Christmas season and it has been a
truly blessed and eventful time. Many show gratitude to loved ones
by giving gifts. As Americans we get lost in the commercial aspect
of the holiday by over spending. We tend to forget the real reason
for why we celebrate. As stated in the quote above, God has given
us the ultimate gift, his son Jesus. As long as we know this, that
is all we need. It is the supreme symbol of love. Gifts are great
but the best is letting someone else know the love and grace of God
and what he has done for us. I would like to thank you all for all
of your warm wishes, cards and prayers. I have kept you in my heart
and prayers as well. I wish all of us well for the new and upcoming
year and we are blessed more than abundantly.

Friendship Baptist Church Christmas Gala
Within the past five years or so my church as held an annual
Christmas Gala. This was my first year attending. It was so fun
and beautiful! A number of committees got together and put it
together. They did a marvelous job of choosing the venue with
music, dancing, prayers and scripture. I had such a great time.
Many people always like to see me in my crown and take pictures and
ask about the pageant and MPA. Everyone that attended looked
beautiful and festive for the occasion. I was especially glad to
get Rev. and Sister Jenkins in the pictures. (Smile!) Merry
Christmas!!

Insights Taping
My sister Shea got a contact for me to get on Fox 4 here in Dallas.
One of the producers, Joe Ellis sent my story through to one of the
local shows called Insights. Insights discusses different
issues, events, problems and people throughout the metroplex.
Rochelle Brown, the Executive Producer of the show, interviewed me.
Everyone at station was so nice. Rochelle is a very sweet person.
I pray they have me on the show again to discuss more of MPA and my
platform: Student Leadership through Law and Government Programs.
This was a wonderful way to bring in the New Year! I look forward
to what this upcoming 2009 brings. I thank God for where he has
taken, bought me from and through! I am thankful for what he has
allowed me to accomplish and the people that I have met and continue
to be in my life.
Thank Melissa for all that you do! You are a wonderful inspiration
to us all. Every time MPA is mentioned know that that is you. God
has blessed you to be a blessing to others whether you know it or
not. That is a good thing!
Nanette, thank you for your “gentle” push! Without you, in many
aspects of my life, I would not be where I am today. You too are a
blessing. You have been blessed with the gift of sight. Thank you
for using it!
I love you both dearly! MPA Family, HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!!!!

Happy New Year’s Everyone! We all make resolutions and vows to
create significant changes in our lives. Many times for those to be

LKB Girls Mentoring-Pageant Rehearsal
Being with these girls is always fun, refreshing and hopeful! I was
a speaker at one of their programs in May as Ms. Texas Plus
America. This time I helped the girls run
through questioning for
the 1st Annual LKB Pageant. This will take place in
April. At first, the girls were really nervous. Believe me, I
understood why! Once we ran through the questions a few times they
began to get more comfortable. Some of the questions that were
asked bought about some interesting conversations and perspectives
from the girls. They are so intelligent and focused. Most were
very confident and well spoken. I look forward to the pageant in
April. Mrs. Phyllis Bedford is the founder and primary sponsor of
the organization. She has such love and high hopes for these
girls. She’s also very devoted and nurturing. I pray one day if I
am a mother, I possess all of these qualities. They truly breed
success!

MLK Day Breakfast-Oklahoma City, OK
(And my birthday! )
It was so wonderful to spend my birthday with the Oklahoma Plus
America Ladies! They are so sweet! We were some of the volunteers
for the MLK Day Breakfast. It was held at event rooms in the hotel
we (Miesha-Mrs. Texas Plus America and Lauren-Miss Texas Plus
America) resided in while there. First, the whole trip was fun! Me
and my road dogs hooked up and hit I35 Sunday evening. Lauren and
her canine sense of direction got us there eventually. Of course,
Miesha and her commentary is always a hoot! I was thoroughly
entertained during throughout the whole adventure. We were greeted
by Franchesca, Giselle, Joyce, Allyse and their crew. We wanted to
stay and talk all night long but the handyman/security guard told us
it was time to get moving. It was good advice because we had a long
day ahead. Monday morning we were greeted by hundreds of people.
They all came in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King! It was such a
beautiful mixture of different types. Different races, different
religions, different in everyway imaginable. But ALL coming
together to pay homage to an American icon who celebrated all of
this. It was beautiful! The speakers, singers and those who gave
prayer did fantastic jobs. It bought tears to my eyes. This was a
great representation of what his dream may have been like. I thank
God I am here to witness it. America is changing.

Inauguration Ball-Kirkwood Temple CME
My coworker, Vorice Lemuel, invited lots of people to her church’s
Inauguration Ball. She said that it was going to be something to
see and surely a fun time. I agreed to go. Boy did we have fun!
They had delicious dinner and dancing! A lot of people think that
Christians don’t have fun. Whatever! She introduced me to tons of
people! Everyone was so nice! During the downtime or rather while
sitting, they had two walls showing the Inauguration that aired
earlier and Inauguration Ball. Everyone that I encountered that day
was so proud. It is such a wonderful time to be an American.

Mock Trial Competition
This is my platform! You must know that I have been waiting all
year for this. It happens once a year. We prepare for a few months
and have two days to show what we have. This year everyone was new
on the team except for two members. As usual, it is very
challenging for the students and for me to teach and them to learn
court processes and terminology. They really got into the case! My
students are so competitive. They gave the other teams a run for
their money! I really enjoy doing this. It is amazing watching
students come up with questions to defend or prosecute the
defendant. It takes them to a whole other level of learning. It
transforms them. Their vocabulary and level of rationale increases
tremendously. They have a completely different sense of
understanding and respect for the law. I see them take education
and studying more seriously. Many times I choose or ask the
students to become a part of the team. It’s great to see them get
an understanding of why I asked them to be a part Mock Trial. We
did not make the finals but we did do a lot better than we did last
year. We now look forward to the beautiful banquet in February.
Great job kids! I am so proud of you!
Until next month!

Happy Valentines Day Everyone! Lots of people get sad and down on
this holiday for many reasons. Some of those reasons being: not
having one to love them, lack of romance, single etc. I played
Cupid and spent time with my family this year instead of going home
with my lip poked out. I might add that it was quite rewarding!
Enjoying people who I know love me allowed me realize that
Valentine’s Day is not just for lovers but love period. All types.
If you have a love, any kind, be grateful for that. Some don’t have
any at all.

HIV/AIDS AWARENESS FUNDRAISER
This event was so fun and different! At the beginning of the show,
four poets, including myself, performed spoken word pertaining to
the different levels of the disease. Then there were performances
and a style show featuring a number of Dallas designers. At the end
of the show, the designers donated different pieces of clothing to
be auctioned off to contribute to the Dallas HIV/AIDS Awareness
charity. The producer and director of the show is Mahari. He is a
brilliant young man with great vision! To be so young, he
definitely knows where he wants to go in life. Numerous people get
skittish when HIV/AIDS discussions come up. PEOPLE BE AWARE!!!! Do
not use or share IV drugs. (Really, don’t do any type of illegal
drugs.) Know yourself and your partner and get tested. This is a
serious disease. This show presented awareness in a very
interesting and enlightening way.

Dallas ISD Mock Trial Awards Ceremony and Luncheon
Although my students did not place, I am still proud of the work
they put into the competition. They had so much fun being away from
the school that day and not eating cafeteria food. I laughed so
hard at them. One of my parents truly went out of her way coming to
the competitions and making sure all of the students had rides to
and from. She is a truly sweet lady and I would like to that her so
much for everything she has done for us this year. Next year, we
are kicking butt! We finally have the hang of it now.

Tarrant County Plus America Pageant
It is that time once again! This was the first local pageant of
this year here in Texas. Constance and Ashley did a great job with
the Tarrant County Pageant. Congratulations!!! I look forward to
attending as many local and state pageants as I can. It is a relief
and interesting to be on the other side of the crown. All of the
contestants were beautiful and had good spirits! The winners are
looking forward to the Texas State Pageant. I know I am!
See you all next month! I’ll
have close to a million events get ready and put your spectacles
on! Be blessed and thankful!!

-Mahatma Gandhi
This month was a very interesting and uplifting time. There was a
lot of soul searching so that I could change who I am as a person.
This was a period of self reflection. I saw that there were a few
things that needed to be tweaked (no one is perfect). For
Christians, this season is Lent. Many people, especially of the
Catholic and Methodist denominations give up something for penance
referencing the sacrifices that Christ has made for us. The
conscious decision of change is remarkable. I knew that I could not
have gotten through without the strength from God.

IT’S NOT OVER RETREAT
My friend, Felicia, from college
invited me and my sister, as well as other ladies to join her for a
retreat at the Lakeview Christian Conference Center in Waxahachie,
TX. We had such a wonderful and relaxing time! It was so glorious
to be in the midst of women who were living life and going through
the same (sometimes something more trying) things you are and are
trying very hard to be that righteous and virtuous woman God wants
us to be. We discussed so many topics and issues. The main topics
were: 1) How do we view ourselves? How do others see us? 2)
Words-Watch them! 3) Virtuous woman-Who is she? 4) It’s not over!
Despair and discouragement is not the end.
I’m an extremely busy woman! My cell rings constantly! This place
is located in the wilderness with no reception. I appreciated it.
Even though our leader wore us out with all of the activities we
were still renewed physically, mentally and spiritually. I do have
to give a shout out to our oldest member of the retreat, Reatter.
She has faced physical ailments for a number of years. She got
through most of the activities like a champ! (She was on my
volleyball team! We won!!) I would like to tell all of the ladies
I love them and you are continually in my prayers. I look forward
to seeing you all next year.

Dallas County Plus America Pageant
I emceed this pageant! It was
so FUN!! BJ Johnson did an excellent job putting together this
event. Texas is doing the dog-gone thang! There was a live band
that sang the mess out of a variety of songs that made me stop,
stare and think about some things. All of the ladies looked so
beautiful! Boy, am I glad to not be competing this year! Shoots!
Just being honest! J The winners are…
Miss South East Dallas-Candace Freeman…Ms. North Dallas-Janice
Kelly…and the Dallas County Plus America Ambassador is Avie McCullar.
I would like to extend a very warm congrats to all of the
delegates. They all did a marvelous job! I look forward to seeing
all of you at the Texas Plus America Pageant in May!
Keep us all in your prayers! Believe me you are in ours. Have a
wonderful month.

This has been a
very trying time in my life right now. I have just purchased a
new home and it has been quite challenging. I am certainly
appreciative of it. Especially after all that I have gone
through. I am a firm believer of anything worth having is worth
working for. Boy, am I working for this! Thank the Lord I am
able to work! (Smile)

Denton County Plus
America Pageant
Constance has done
it again! She did a great job directing another Texas County Plus
America Pageant. Included with this pageant were a Junior Miss and
a Young Miss category for little girls and pre-teens. All of the
ladies young and old were fabulous! I know that putting on a
pageant is a very difficult feat. I give major props to all who do
this with the dedication and love so that it is successful.

LKB Pageant
It is always such a
pleasure working with these young ladies. I am a teacher and at
times it seems the future of our youth can be a bit discouraging. I
am uplifted each time I encounter these ladies. Mrs. Phyllis
Bedford, their sponsor has so much hope and love for them. She
gives them her best and in return she is rewarded with a wonderful
group. Lady Jade, a local Dallas celebrity-K104 radio, emceed the
affair. She was perfect for the job! She is one of the morning
emcees of a hip hop show and balances the craziness of everyone else
with cool. She is a great example of following your own mind and
being your own person despite what peers may say and think.
My time is winding down! I look forward to
seeing everyone in July!!!!!!! OMG!!! This has been a fabulous
year! Have a great month everyone! Congratulations new queens in
Louisiana!

“The basic premise of
sisterhood is the unity of women and our ability to display
cohesiveness in tackling problems, reaching goals and encouraging
each other. There is no place of selfishness in good teamwork.”

This month has been an extremely busy month yet productive with Miss
Plus America. In my travels to the different state pageants, I see
that in our efforts within this pageant system a sisterhood is
created that is clearly undeniable. We are all here for the same
purposes. We all lift up one another in order to get our messages
spread. This month has been the proudest yet!

Oklahoma Plus America Pageant
It is always a pleasure to take a road trip to the good state of
Oklahoma to visit our fellow queens Franchesca, Joyce, Giselle and
Allyse. This year was the second year for Oklahoma to have a state
pageant. These ladies are amazing! Their dedication and love for
Miss Plus America is clearly evident. They crowned a wonderful
group of ladies who are representing and looking forward to coming
to nationals to compete and enjoy the week. Of course my road dogs,
Miesha and Lauren came along. We had our usual fun like playing
tricks on one another and laughing until our stomachs seemed they
would go flat? Those are my girls!

Illinois Plus America Pageant
I had to get my hips out of the south! I am so glad I did! This
gave me the opportunity to visit with my friend Aisha from high
school and meet the delegates from Illinois. This was a great
experience. This was the first Illinois Plus America Pageant. Juri
and all of the girls did a marvelous job! I can’t wait for next
year! The ladies were super sweet and dressed too cute! All
weekend, I said that Chicago is filled with extremely talented
people! Miss Illinois Plus America, Shettima Webb has a beautiful
voice and should be in the talent portion of the national pageant.
Even her son thinks so!

Texas Plus America Pageant
Well, well, well!!! Texas Plus America was the bomb!!!! No, let me
rephrase that. Texas Plus America was the ATOMIC BOMB!!!! Nanette
Watts has done it again! I thought last year was spectacular. No,
I was mistaken. This year took the cake! I’m glad I wasn’t
competing! Whew! These ladies were stunning and delightful. And
the clothes! I seriously wanted to go shopping after the pageant
was over in a number of wardrobes. Very fashionable. Lori Adams
and Debbie Shannon graced us with their presence! I was so
excited. They are so fun. Lori, we will definitely have to sneak
away again at nationals for sanity maintenance. Debbie, did you
ever get home? I hope so…

Women In Hats-White Rock Tabernacle
One of my coworkers, Sabrina Mouland, has continually requested that
I make an appearance at one of her events at her church. There was
always another event coinciding with her programs for me to be able
to attend any of her programs until today. This was an enjoyable
and uplifting church service. My loves for hats is genetic. My
Mama Lillie and Mama are avid wearers. Hats symbolize so much
within. We all wear hats. The hat I’ve been wearing lately is
adorned with jewels!
The national pageant is coming soon! Congratulations to all of the
state pageant winners. It was a pleasure witnessing your triumphant
win. I look forward to seeing and meeting all of you. This time
last year was exciting. This year it is event more exhilarating!
Much love to each and every one of us. Remember, this is much
bigger than each of us individually. (No pun intended!) LOL!!!
Photos Coming Soon!
